Initially it competed against many popular word processors such as WordStar, Multimate, and WordPerfect. Its crude WYSIWYG/mouse support was a direct response to the Apple Lisa/Mac, and VisiCorp Visi On. Its design made use of a mouse and WYSIWYG graphics. The Microsoft Word word processor was first introduced for MS-DOS in 1983. Word 5.1 continued to run well until the very last Classic MacOS. The later Word 6 was a Windows port and poorly received. Word 5.1 for Mac, released in 1992 ran on the original 68000 CPU and was the last to be specifically designed as a Macintosh application. Later Windows versions were part of Borland Office/Novell PerfectOffice/Corel Office.
